Single-molecule studies of RNA polymerase: one singular sensation, every little step it takes.
Transcription is the first of many biochemical steps that turn the genetic information found in DNA into the proteins responsible for driving cellular processes. In this review, we highlight certain advantages of single-molecule techniques in the study of prokaryotic and eukaryotic transcription, and the specific ways in which these techniques complement conventional, ensemble-based biochemistr...
متن کاملZero-One Rounding of Singular Vectors
Given a matrix A, it can be shown that there is a vector z ∈ 0, 1 for which |Az|/|Z| ≥ |A|2/C log(n) (a0/1 sum of columns of A which witnesses its large spectral norm) for instance by discretizing the top singular vector of A and taking a dyadic expansion. We give a simple geometric proof of this fact by relating it to the Euclidean diameter of a polytope, and obtain a sharp bound of |Az| ≥ 2|A...
متن کاملSingular quadratic functionals of one dependent variable
Singular quadratic functionals of one dependent variable with nonseparated boundary conditions are investigated. Necessary and sufficient conditions for nonnegativity of these functionals are derived using the concept of coupled point and singularity condition. The paper also includes two comparison theorems for coupled points with respect to the various boundary conditions.
متن کاملSingular Schrödinger operators in one dimension
We consider a class of singular Schrödinger operators H that act in L2(0,∞), each of which is constructed from a positive function φ on (0,∞). Our analysis is direct and elementary. In particular it does not mention the potential directly or make any assumptions about the magnitudes of the first derivatives or the existence of second derivatives of φ. For a large class of H that have discrete s...
متن کاملSuccessful Integration of Interactive Neuroscience Simulations into a Non-Laboratory Sensation & Perception Course
Laboratory core courses in neuroscience at small liberal arts colleges are few in number and thus under great pressure to offer active laboratory explorations of a wide range of topics. Furthermore, traditional lab activities require substantial resources in terms of space, time, equipment and organization, further limiting the extent to which a school can provide students with important intera...
